As a child, I wanted to be…
So this afternoon, my partner and I decided to try and sort through some of the family photos on our computer. It was a massive task, but we knew it had to be done! As we scrolled through them, one by one, we couldn’t help but notice how much our girls had grown up in the last two years. Time has passed us too quickly and to be honest, it’s a little scary. I’m proud of how far my girls have come and I know that as they grow older I’m only going to become prouder and prouder. It often makes me wonder what path their life will take them down.
Out of curiosity, with the twins sat watching TV on the opposite sofa, I decided to ask them a question. What was that question, I hear you ask? The question:
‘What do you want to be when you’re older.’
The first twin answered ‘I want to be a doctor when I’m older, I want to fix people when they’re sick and make them better’. I thought that this was a reasonable answer, and a decent occupation to aim for. I let her know that to be able to become a doctor she would have to work very hard at school.
The answer of the second twin wasn’t as sensible, but it did make me laugh. She answered ‘I want to be eleven years old’. I guess it was my fault for not being more specific with the question. I commended her for choosing something that was almost certainly achievable.
Then, I asked the toddler. She stared at me, blank faced and answered ‘Green’. The twins laughed. Her answer wasn’t as achievable, but I didn’t dampen her spirits. I pretended that her answer was an intelligent one and congratulated her for it. Bless her little cotton socks, she looked super proud of herself.
So, I guess I didn’t have a whole lot to worry about. My girls had seemingly already decided where they want their lives to take them. One is to become a doctor, one is to become eleven years old and the other is to become green.
Why not ask your child(ren) what they want to be when they’re older. Any ‘unrealistic/ funny’ answers? Let me know!
